Our trees still grows in Almora [part one]

In a life span of 30 years (I will be within a next few weeks), there are very few days I remember..very few faces and memories I have....most of the people I have met or places I have been was like a Tequila shot....scintillating at first but the sensation slowly fades into your tongue...the sweet salted aftertaste lasts for about an hour and then goes off...Amongst scores of stuff I have been thinking over, there are something I would like to share for the sake of posterity as my ancestors genes are pretty infamous for Alzheimer.

It was 2001, sufficiently long back to be considered as a decade. I was studying a small Tech college in downtown Calcutta. I did not had any friends in college, and being extremely shy with a speech and hearing problem, I seldom mingled in groups...which people of my age did it with utter panache.

That year, we decided to spend our Durga Puja vacation in a small Himalayan town called Haldwani. I had never heard its name before. It looked like a small dot on the giant map of Kumaon Himalayas I had borrowed from a fellow classmate.

I was quite dissatisfied with the choice of vacation though. Being in my college freshman years, and where my friends would date and roam around the city with pretty girls hand in hand during Durga Puja and eat egg roll, I found this idea of visiting a relative in remote Himalayan village amidst all the hustle bustle in Calcutta, quite revolting.

After a decent amount of fiery discussion, I decided to follow my father, who promised that it would be life changing experience for me...I reluctantly sat on the crowded Akal Takht Express.
It was Sosthi, 6th Day of Durga Puja...Like a prelude to Christmas, the festivities had just began..I could sense a joyous mood all around me except me, who like people of my age was unsure and perturbed by the choice that elders made without consultation.

It was an overnight journey though the hearts of Bengal, Bihar and UP, crisscrossing three states, countless paddy fields, semi deserted and deserted stations, thinly built railways guardsman waving green moth eaten flags. My favorite however was a certain species, called Chanachur-walah, the man folks who sell mouth watering mixture of various delectable chanachur across various Indian long and short distance trains.

As we traveled through the gentle green plains of Bengal into rustic UP, the landscape changes. It had a kind of masculine, rugged, unapologetic country side features. As dark night trickled in, I decided to retreat into my upper berth.

Thinking about what awaits me tomorrow, I went to sleep after sufficiently satisfied with my choice of dinner which comprised of aluminum foil wrapped extra oily Chapathi (Indian bread) with thick Dal (Indian lentil soup) followed by several sweets which my father bought from local sweet seller.

I closed my eyes and started visualizing what my classmates might be doing now! Some might be in fabled Maddox square, may be in Simla part or Ballygunge Sarbojonin! I was sure they are having more romantic/adult fun than I was having on sluggishly moving ancient locomotive where people tend to be snoring a lot.

On Bangalore

After 7 years on a leafy suburb of Bangalore, I have decided to move on to fastest growing semi urban area. It was also partly contributed by enormous price tags associated with the properties in South Bangalore. South Bangalore, once home to cultural Bangaloreans, now houses scores of migrants from different parts of the country. Their language, food resonates through the air. Bangalore is becoming more globalized and consumerized.

A walk across the fabled 80 feet road will show you almost all the known brands of the city, Chinese dolls to German eye-wear to Punjabi food. Streets are teeming with smartly dressed people from North East, Paani puriwalas from east Bihar, Momo’s from Darjeeling, it has all.

People are on a buying spree, as the PP (Purchasing power) of mango man from Bangalore goes up, so does the property, food and other prices too. A 2BHK in decent locality in Bangalore now costs 25 thousand rupees! This pretty high considering this is 25 times salary of an average graduate in India.
I am kind of worried about this tremendous growth of Bangalore. It is excellent that it has provided me with bread and butter for long, but cost of unlimited growth has its side effects. The acute shortage of drinking water, auto menace, total lack of government regulation on property prices, broken down roads, problems are too many. The once temperate climate of Bangalore, where every evening it used to rain and I had to carry an umbrella all along the year is now a finely cherished memory as the average rainfall has drastically gone down resulted in a vortex of water crisis.

As I stand near a absolutely jam packed east Bangalore bus stand waiting for bus now for 45 minutes, I sighted a couple of thinly built lads with specs carrying big suitcases wrapped on olive green cover with name written on Bold letters, I know they are the latest entrants in Bangalore. Oblivious to problems around, they look poised for long pitched battle.

July 2011

July, the month of poet, romance and of course monsoon…
I inevitably ended up reaching home around mid night; only to find one of my room-mate in an utter intoxicated state awake….he hurriedly came towards me and confided that had a break up…Quite an scary thought to be very honest, I tried calm him down by sharing some intricate personal experience…but he kept on shouting in an chaste Punjabi to his unnamed lover…

Morning was a bit calmer…He recovered and profusely apologized to me. Later I got to know from a fellow room-mate that it was his break up anniversary and it was his traditional way of spending 17th July night.
I wonder about the miracle called love and drug called separation…

Monsoon

It seems that monsoon is here…sudden winds blowing pieces of clouds around like mischievous kid playing with her mother…gentle yet unpredictable…

Last few days of my life has been hectic, some new guests at my place…trying to accommodate them in a flat without much of basic amenities has been challenging…but I am coping well…

Settling in a new flat is always intimidating…thoughts about buying whole array of items, scares the wit out of me…However, it is quite comforting on the other side…sitting on your own couch, watching clouds passing by…

Letter to someone I have not seen for a long time

Dear Sunshine,

This is my first letter in a long time...2012 and its memories have already faded into my brain..A not too new 2013 stares at me....Life has changed over the months....I have become a sort of different person...my strange behavior of lonely wandering has now changed...It has a new destination...
The paths now lead to you…whom I love....all the dreams start and surround you...
I have argued with you…I have fought you...loved you and dreamed and hoped and prayed for you....You have been a strange influence in my life....
You have been firm and at the same calm in the face of storms....

Our love is growing stronger day by day...from the depths of fight into the new future...I promise to be worthy of you always....I promise to take better care of you...provide with hope and attention always and not to shy away from responsibilities....
I am thousands of mile away from you...sitting a small room stuffed with unwashed socks and pile of cloths....a collective sense of frustration creeps inside me...for not seeing you too often...not spending enough time with you....

But I am stuck in place...in a work with little happiness...you gives me something which I cannot explain...some sort of elixir...your voice recharges my battery...gives me a tingling feeling....
You are still reason I am fighting for...for waking up morning and dragging my tired soul to another excruciatingly awful day at work....
You are the reason I am here....

xoxo

Memoirs of a year

It was exactly one year back, I was sitting on small room, painted in a light yellow color with big double glazed windows and my room heater was blazing all guns. I was sporting a beard and suffering from cold while suddenly phone rings and I jump onto a street with million of people kissing, hugging, shedding tears as the 2012 got started.

That was one year back.

It has been a pretty interesting year to be honest. From the gloomy windy York to sunny country sides of Aviemore into the brightly lit London to ever colorful Calcutta to a crowded shopping malls in Bangalore, it has been a whirlwind tour for me!

I have met some wonderful people over the course of time, some became friend, some not too friendly, some forgotten like they never came, while some left an indelible mark on my mind. But each person came for a purpose and made me learn something.

This year has made me a better person, a wiser and sober in certain sense and has enriched my experiences with memories for a lifetime. I have sat over the top of Calton Hill and watching the clouds pass me and that sudden wind which stirs my soul and have shared small pizza on a maddening Calcutta street with someone special and have meet my parents and octogenarian grannie after an year and saw the toothless radiant smile on their face and have received a sudden gift of poetry from a charming lady with a handwritten note scribbled on it soaked in affection...priceless memories...It will stay with me.

I thank whoever has blessed me, loved me, waited for me all night hoping to hear my voice....your prayer has made my life, strengthen me and guided me in troubled times...
I will keep you in my prayers.
